Mystery Skype, Open Night and the Earthshaker Project

Mystery Skype

We have been very busy in LA31 today! In the morning, we used Skype to videoconference with a ‘mystery class’ somewhere in the world. Neither class knew where the other was located and it was a race to see which team could guess the other’s location first. Through a series of intelligent questions, we managed to work out that the other class was located in Nanjing, China! However, we weren’t quite as quick as our overseas friends who won the challenge, correctly guessing that we were Skyping from Perth.

This was an amazing opportunity to learn about Chinese culture first hand. We are hoping to connect up with our Chinese friends again sometime, but only if the school’s Principal (a certain Mr Ken Armstrong) allows it!

Later in the day, we worked on videos for our EarthShaker Project. The whole project is still rather ‘secret squirrel’, but you might like to check out our teaser video; it’s online now.

Finally, we spent some time planning for the school open night. This is being held tomorrow (Wednesday) from 5pm – 7 pm. We hope you are able to come along, have a chat and experience first hand the amazing things that are happening at Landsdale Primary School.

The spectacular pancake breakfast!!! By Albina and Tylah

Shake That!

On Wednesday the 16th of May Mr Fuller made us spectacular pancakes for breakfast. Some kids from LA 31 came in early to help Mr Fuller set up ,some kids came to school at 7:30 in the morning. Then Mr Fuller put some music on. The funny part was that we were shaking the pancake mixture and we were dancing to Party Rock Anthem. The song said “Shake that ” and we were shaking the pancake mixture for fun.

These are the ingredients that Mr Fuller bought for our pancake day : 6 Pancake mixtures, 6 big bottles of juice, maple syrup, sugar, jam, butter, lemon to put on the pancakes and+more .YUM YUM. After we finished our breakfast some people volunteered to clean up the mess that we made. Everyone said that the pancakes were fantastic and that he should make us some more in the future.

Landsdale Film-making Club

Red Carpet PremiereAttention all budding actors, directors, editors, musicians, artists, writers and costume designers! We are pleased to announce the launch of the Landsdale Film-Making Club.

Our club will be making several short films that will be showcased to the school community at a red carpet premiere later in the term. We will also be sharing these movies with the world via the Landsdale website.

Members of the film-making club will attend one special lesson each week during this term. They will also be expected to spend time working on the film during lunch and at home. This is a serious commitment and we are looking for students with enthusiasm, persistence, talent and a willingness to learn.

Students who think they have what it takes should fill in the online application form. Places are limited so not everyone will be selected this term. However, we will be running the club again later in the year, so there will plenty of opportunities for you to see your name in lights!

Be quick —- Applications close Thursday 17 May 2012.

Science Investigation – by Alicia and Andie

Ewww yuk!On Wednesday LA 31 started an investigation on creating mould with our science teacher Miss Harman. We had to go in groups of three. Then our science teacher Miss Harman bought in some mould from her bread, orange , grape.

We had to get a piece of orange, lemon or bread put it in a zip lock bag and put it in a spot either outside or inside, cold or warm. Every second day were are checking our oranges or lemons and see if they have mould on them and recording the data on our charts.

On our charts we write down the day, if there is mould or not, colour, temperature of the location and moisture levels. Before we started the investigation we had to fill out a work sheet that with questions we had to answer. The questions were:

  • What are you going to investigate ?
  • What do you think will happen? Explain why.
  • What variables will you change, measure or keep the same ?
  • Describe the conditions under which you wil grow your mould.
  • What equipment will you need ?

We also were given a mould sheet that has information about mould and we had to highlight the keywords and colour the pictures of the mould in the colours of our mould.

The mould is growing fast. It’s gross!!

Pancake Breakfast!

Pancake Mountain

As a reward for their fantastic behaviour and achievement in first term, I will be cooking all of the students in LA31 a delicious breakfast next Wednesday 16 May. From 8 am, there will be pancakes, cereal, juice, milo and toast available  in the alcove near the Year 6 classrooms.

If you would like to come along and join us for breakfast (and maybe flip a pancake or two) we would love to see you there. There will be plenty of food so be sure to arrive with an empty stomach!

Please let me know if your child has any special dietary needs and I will be sure to accommodate them. We hope to see you there!

Around the World with LA31

Over the next fortnight, each student in LA31 will be researching a country and its culture. This project will be completed partly at home and partly at school. Details of the task and the marking guide are available here.

This research project is due in two stages. Next Monday, 14 May, the students will be asked to submit their mind-map and notes for the project while the final project will be due on Monday 21 May.

It is expected that students will spend around 20 minutes a night on their project over the next fortnight. This equates to around five hours of work at home. This will be the only homework set for the fortnight.

The students will also be given around five hours in class to work on their project. As a result, I am anticipating that students will produce a high quality final product. Parents may assist students if they become stuck but the final project should be your child’s own work.

If you have any queries, just leave a comment and I will get back to you.
