Bake-a-book!

IMG_4311.jpg_and_2014LaptopSchedule-1.pdf__page_1_of_3_Well done to Brooke, Taneisha, Emily and Dominique for their fantastic entries in the ‘bake-a-book’ competition for Book Week. The girls chose to bake cakes themed around two of our class’s favourite novels: The Hunger Games (quite appropriate, really) and Twilight. Their cakes were displayed in the library where they were admired by students from throughout the school.

It really is wonderful to see our junior Masterchefs using their creativity and culinary skills to help promote the joy of reading. A special thanks is due to Mrs Murray, our beloved teacher-librarian, and any family members involved in the creation of these masterpieces.

Science Day

On Friday, the Year Six students co-ordinated an amazing science day for the entire school. Students from Year One up to Year Seven were entranced as they discovered the science behind gooey slime, hypnotic lava lamps, air-pressure fuelled rockets and diet coke fountains. Yes it was messy but the learning involved was amazing. Congratulations to Ms Nelson, Mrs O’Malley, Mr Hayward and the fantastic Year Six students for making this day possible.

Check out some great photos of the students in action:

Challenge-based Learning: Water

IMGP0044Our Year Six students are teaming up with the Year 4/5 students from Mrs Russell’s class to undertake a challenge-based learning project on the topic of water. Our goal is to improve our home, school and community use of water. This is an exciting chance for our students to take on a leadership role and make a difference in their community.

We are using a range of tools to help us with our project. We have brainstormed ideas using Padlet and are recording our learning on the school wiki (Ask your child to log in and show you our work).  We will be conducting experiments at home and at school as well as researching issues to do with water use, water catchments and pollution.

The students are also keen to work with experts on this topic. If you or your friends have any expertise managing, conserving or working with water, we would love to hear from you!

The students will have a large say in the direction that this project takes. I look forward to seeing what action they take to help look after Australia’s most precious resource.

Just a reminder that school photos will be taken this Tuesday. Each student has received an envelope that they will need to bring with them and hand to the photographer on the day. Spare envelopes are available from the office if you need them.

Please make sure that your child is wearing full school uniform and is looking their best on the day!

Ashdale Secondary College Open Day

ASCRecently, you will have received a note advising you of an Open Day to be held at Ashdale Secondary College on the 12th August at 10:15.

Please note that the Open Day is designed for parents and not students. The Year Six students have already been to the College once this year and will have many further opportunities to do so over the coming eighteen months.

I do encourage you to have a look at what the College has to offer.  ASC and Landsdale Primary work closely together and the College provides a natural extension of the teaching and learning strategies that are proving so successful here at Landsdale.

Pancakes and Pyjamas

I am pleased to announce that the students in LA31 have now earned nine thousand points on our Class Dojo system. This means that I have ‘caught’ the students doing the right thing on literally thousands of occasions. It is a real pleasure to see the students consistently following our class agreements and displaying our school values.

As a reward, I have agreed to cook a pancake breakfast for the students this Friday morning at school. From 8:30 am, I will be providing pancakes, juice and cereal in the Year Six block. If you would like to come along and help out (or just join us for a pancake or two), you are more than welcome.

Some students have also asked if they can wear their pyjamas to school on this day. I am quite happy with this, as long as the students wear outfits that are suitable for a primary school setting — no short nighties, boxer shorts or shoestring straps please. We will have lunch and recess in the classroom so other classes will not be affected.

Since we have senior sport in the afternoon, students will need to bring their school uniform (with faction shirts and sneakers) to school with them. They can get changed into their sports clothes at lunchtime.
